The European Waste Catalogue (EWC)

The EWC lists all wastes according to generic industry or process. Those that are hazardous are identified with an asterisk (*). The Environment Agency has published a consolidated EWC. Wastes that are classed as hazardous outright (i.e. regardless of the quantity of the material present in the waste) are absolute entries and are highlighted in red and marked with an "A". Other wastes require further consideration to determine whether they are hazardous or not, depending on the amount of dangerous substances present above threshold concentrations. These are known as mirror entries and are highlighted in blue and marked with an "M". Wastes not classified as hazardous are shown in black without any markings. Further guidance on the EWC can be found on the Environment Agency website.
